The Draw of Local Markets

Note from the editor: Spradling is an international company; as such, we serve people across multiple borders and languages.  In order to share a little of our company culture, we decided to do something a little different with one of our talented team members.  Adriana’s blog is written in her native language, as well as in English.  We hope you enjoy her engaging take on an everyday scene in Bogotá, Colombia.

One of the biggest inspirations for artists and designers throughout history has been nature. Nature’s forms, colors and textures can be found by visiting many places, not only in the countryside, but also in cities. A good example of this can be seen in local markets – magical places where we find a variety of flowers, fruits and vegetables, a place full of color, aromas and flavors that serve as a point of inspiration for designers.

In Bogotá, Colombia one of the most important markets for inspiration is Paloquemao. There, all our senses are stimulated by the great wealth of tropical fruits that often serve as the starting point for the creation of various, diverse objects. The fashion company, Marni, took elements from the market to give birth to their latest collection entitled, “Marni Mercado de Paloquemao,” or “Marni Paloquemao Market,” which was exhibited at El Salone del Mobile 2015 in Milán. Presented in a large marketplace converted into a showroom, “Marni Mercado de Paloquemao” was composed of minimalistic, colorful design, where chairs, fabrics, tables, baskets, and decorative sculptures were the protagonists.
